The works presented in Spaces of Species question the categories of adaptation, variation and speciation based on the relationship of reciprocity between living organisms and the environment. These same issues are debated in contemporary biology, which opposes the gene-centered paradigm and opts for an epigenetic perspective.
The result of the workshop “Antropología del cerdo” (Anthropology of the Pig) where we analyzed the presence of animals in the city. We worked with bones bought in local markets and constructed a beast to be hunted as a performance.
Bioartefactos. Desgranar lentamente un maíz was presented at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca and discussed the issue of transgenic corn, non-industrialized agricultural production and Oaxacan traditions, with the participation of the collectives BiosExmachinA, MAMAZ and Desmodium-máquina, along with artists Minerva Hernández, Héctor Cruz, Lena Ortega and Alfadir Luna. First transgenic and biotechnological exhibition in Mexico, centered on the idea of genesis, growth and production. For this curatorship, we worked collectively with arts, science, technology and humanities. Disciplinary crossings allowed us to question the concept of art by deterritorializing its natural course and forcing it out of its intended discipline.
Thus, somehow, the works proposed for this exhibition played with the idea of a complex and dynamic ecosystem, since these are not isolated works, but related to each other generating dialogs and meaningful relationships.
